Frequently asked questions
What does a dynamic compressor do?
A compressor reduces the volume of loud sounds and optionally boosts quiet sounds. The result is a more consistent, even volume level. Podcasters use it to avoid volume jumps. Musicians use it for punch and presence.
What settings should I use for a podcast?
Start with the Podcast preset: threshold -20 dB, ratio 4:1, attack 10ms, release 250ms, makeup gain +3 dB. This gently evens out volume without sounding obviously processed.
What is the difference between a compressor and a limiter?
A limiter is a compressor with a very high ratio (typically 20:1 or higher) and fast attack. It prevents audio from exceeding a set level. Use the Limiter preset for hard peak control.
What is makeup gain?
Compression reduces overall volume. Makeup gain adds volume back after compression to restore the perceived loudness. Typical values are +3 to +9 dB depending on how much compression you apply.
Does this upload my audio to a server?
No. Compression runs through the Web Audio API's DynamicsCompressorNode in your browser. The processed output is encoded to WAV locally. Your file never leaves your device.
Can I use this on my phone?
Yes. Works in any modern mobile browser. No app needed.
What ratio should I use for podcast compression?
4:1 is the standard starting point for speech. It means audio 4 dB above the threshold gets reduced to 1 dB above it. Higher ratios (8:1 or above) sound more processed. The Podcast preset uses 4:1 with a -20 dB threshold, which works well for most voice recordings.
